Whether you’re planning a multi-generational family trip and are looking for fun for all ages, or are the parents of preteens hoping to engage them in interesting new pursuits, we’ve found some great options to choose from. Remember what a typical day in your childhood looked like? Probably not, but we bet you can vividly recall a family trip that blew your young mind. While many of us are contemplating our big travel plans for the next year, now might be an excellent time to let those long-dreamt-about family vacation ideas come to fruition.
Finding the Perfect Vacation Spot for All Ages
If you want your child or teenager to experience the same magic on vacation, take them to any of these family vacation destinations. From glaciers to beachfronts, dinosaurs to Disney characters, there’s something here for everyone — even the kid that’s hard to please.
Considerations for Affordability, Accessibility, and Amenities
When planning your family’s best holiday destinations, it’s important to consider factors like affordability, accessibility, and amenities to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for all. We’ve scoured the country to uncover the most family-friendly destinations that cater to a wide range of budgets, abilities, and interests, making it easier than ever to find the perfect vacation spot for your loved ones.
Theme Parks and Activity Centers
For families seeking thrilling adventures and fun-filled days, the United States is home to some of the world’s most iconic family theme parks and amusement park vacations. From the roller coaster destinations of the Midwest to the magical world of Disney World travel, there’s something to captivate visitors of all ages.
Cedar Point Amusement Park: The Roller Coaster Capital
Cedar Point has gorgeous views of the Lake Erie shore, especially from the top of some of the best roller coasters around. There’s also a water park that’s fun for everyone. It’s the roller coaster capital of the world with more than 10 miles of track!
Disney World: A Magical Destination for Princesses and Princes
Of all the places to take kids, Disney World probably requires the most amount of planning. The two biggest things that helped make the trip enjoyable for us was using a free (!) Disney concierge planner — they have intimate knowledge of everything from restaurants to lesser-known gems hiding in the park, like a great place to sit to watch fireworks — and designating someone in the group to become a pro at understanding and executing the Fast Pass, Lightning Lane-type offerings. Disney World is massive; we took it slow to prevent meltdowns, and even baked in days to just recover at the hotel in between park visits.
Sesame Place: A Toddler’s Paradise
The world’s best park for toddlers and preschoolers is scaled to young fans of Elmo and the gang. Spend your time on water attractions like The Count’s Splash Castle, Big Bird’s Rambling River and Bert & Ernie’s Splashy Shores during the summer. Then dry off and do the rest: Take a dizzying ride in Flying Cookie Jars, ride Flyin’ Fish and Peek-A-Bug (in Elmo’s World) and explore Sesame Neighborhood via Oscar’s Wacky Taxi Rollercoaster.
Educational and Cultural Experiences
For families seeking immersive and educational activities, two standout destinations are the The Strong National Museum of Play and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. These captivating attractions offer unforgettable experiences that celebrate childhood and bring the magic of literature to life.
The Strong National Museum of Play: Celebrating Childhood
This place is a kid’s (and adult’s) paradise. You and the family can spend all day here and still not scratch the surface. From the Barbie exhibit to the slew of nostalgic pinball games, guests will be in their glory. There is even a mini Wegmans where kids can (pretend) shop and play cashier!
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Bringing Magic to Life
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has rides and experiences that’ll satisfy everyone in the family. Enjoy thrill rides like ‘The Forbidden Journey’ or relax with a butterbeer at the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley. Being there really makes you feel immersed in the world of Harry Potter. I’ll never forget buying a wand at Ollivanders!
Outdoor Adventures and National Parks
If your kid is into family outdoor adventures, this corner of Florida’s Space Coast is a must-visit. There are several cities that make up the Space Coast, including Cocoa Beach and Port Canaveral, but Cocoa Beach is probably our favorite. They have the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier, where locals gather to watch the spaceship launches, and the iconic Kennedy Space Center is also nearby. It’s a wonderful place for all ages, and kids will definitely enjoy the space tours, the beach, and the sightseeing.
Even though we visited Glacier National Park when most of the park was still closed (it was too early in the year and there was still snow around), we were still stunned by the area: gorgeous snow-topped mountains rising high into the sky; a beautiful, still lake in which to admire those mountains and large glaciers; and hiking trails galore. It was the most mind-blowing national park vacation we saw on our trip, and we can understand why everyone raves about it. We can’t recommend a visit there enough.
Best Family Holiday Destinations in Vibrant Cities
When the weather is nice, we don’t think there’s a better city in the United States than Chicago. Set on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago has world-class food (try the deep dish, sushi, and hot dogs), the fun and kitschy Navy Pier, Millennium Park with its famous bean-shaped statue, a kick-ass aquarium, and iconic architecture (be sure to take an architecture tour).
Chicago: A Blend of Urban Excitement and Lakefront Charm
With its dynamic urban energy and picturesque lakefront setting, Chicago offers families a captivating blend of city adventures and natural beauty. From indulging in the city’s renowned culinary scene to exploring iconic landmarks like Millennium Park, there’s something to delight every member of the family in this vibrant Midwestern destination.
San Diego Zoo: Encountering Wildlife in a Renowned Setting
The San Diego Zoo ended up being much bigger than we had imagined. One thing we did that really stood out was making a lunch reservation ahead of time. We sat outside near a waterfall and honestly it felt like a vacation in it of itself. It was great to have a place to plop down and just recharge. The San Diego Zoo is one of the world’s best zoos — and one of the few places in the U.S. to see the world’s smallest bear.
Historical Journeys and Living Museums
For those seeking an immersive educational experience that transports them back in time, the Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts is an absolute must-visit. This living history museum offers families a unique opportunity to step into the world of 17th-century colonial America, where they can interact with costumed interpreters and explore the daily lives of the Wampanoag people and the original Pilgrim settlers.
As we wandered through the recreated Wampanoag homesite and 1627 English village, we were struck by the level of detail and authenticity that brought these historical settings to life. Our children were captivated by the hands-on activities, such as grinding corn, weaving baskets, and learning traditional crafts, which provided a tangible connection to the past. The Plimoth Plantation truly offers a one-of-a-kind glimpse into America’s early history, making it an invaluable family historical vacation destination.
Beyond the living museum exhibits, the Plimoth Plantation also features a wealth of living history museums and educational programs that delve deeper into the region’s colonial heritage. From guided tours of the recreated 17th-century village to interactive demonstrations on colonial-era cooking and agricultural techniques, there are endless opportunities for families to immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry of this remarkable historic site.
Whether you’re seeking to ignite your children’s curiosity about the past or simply want to experience a unique and memorable family vacation, the Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts is a true gem that promises to transport you back in time and leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
Beach and Island Getaways
For families seeking a tropical escape, the United States offers an abundance of stunning beach and island destinations that cater to every age and interest. From the iconic Waikiki Beach in Hawaii to the vibrant Miami Beach in Florida, these locations promise unforgettable memories and a chance to immerse yourselves in the sun, sand, and surf.
Waikiki Beach: Hawaiian Paradise for Families
Waikiki Beach is a true family beach vacation paradise, with its miles of soft white sand, crystal clear turquoise waters, and the majestic backdrop of Diamond Head. Families can enjoy world-class snorkeling, surfing lessons, and traditional Hawaiian luaus together, creating lasting memories of their island getaway. The nearby attractions and activities cater to all ages, ensuring everyone in the family will be captivated by the sheer beauty and cultural richness of this Hawaiian oasis.
Miami Beach: Tropical Vibes and Vibrant Culture
In contrast to the serene Hawaiian setting, Miami Beach offers a pulsating, trendy atmosphere that enthralls families with its Art Deco architecture, bustling nightlife, and eclectic dining scene. Families can bask in the tropical family beach vacation vibes, splash in the turquoise ocean, and soak up the lively culture that makes this Florida hotspot a truly unique destination. Whether you’re strolling the iconic boardwalk, exploring the lively art galleries, or simply soaking up the sun, Miami Beach promises an unforgettable island getaway for the whole family.
Multi-Generational Family Travel
For families seeking to create lasting memories together, destinations that cater to all ages and interests are essential. Two such gems that offer the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation for multi-generational groups are Aspen Snowmass and Cooperstown.
Aspen Snowmass: Ski Destinations for All Skill Levels
Aspen Snowmass is an idyllic ski resort that provides snow-filled excitement for every member of the family. From gentle, beginner-friendly slopes to thrilling expert runs, there’s something to captivate skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. After a day on the mountain, families can gather around the fireplace, take in stunning vistas of the Rockies, and create cherished memories together.
Cooperstown: Baseball Nostalgia and Family Bonding
In Cooperstown, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum serves as the perfect backdrop for baseball-loving families to bond over America’s favorite pastime. Kids and grandparents alike can explore the storied history of the game, admire cherished artifacts, and even play catch on the legendary fields. This immersive experience allows multi-generational groups to share their passion for the sport and forge stronger connections.
Affordable Family Vacations
The mile-high city (not least because marijuana is legal there), Denver has a mix of outdoor ruggedness and big-city living. It has a huge craft beer scene (be sure to take a beer tasting tour), excellent restaurants, a large international airport with lots of connections, and proximity to the mountains. It’s clean, and the locals are incredibly friendly. There are few cities in the US I want to live in, but I love Denver enough to say that it’s one of them.
Denver: Urban Adventures and Mountain Escapes
Niagara Falls offers the perfect blend of natural wonder and family-friendly thrills. Witness the awe-inspiring power of the falls, then enjoy attractions like the Maid of the Mist boat tour, Niagara’s Fury 4D experience, and the Niagara SkyWheel for panoramic views. With affordable accommodation and dining options, this iconic destination provides an unforgettable vacation at a budget-friendly price point.
